Dear John:

Thanks for your letter; I think the manuals problem
is on the way to being solved.

Now I have a proposition that I hope will interest you.
The initial purpose of LOTS is to switch the computing for classes
from a batch to a time-sharing mode. We know the DECSystem 20
has enough compute capacity for the job, because it is similar
in compute power to the IBM360/67 that formerly did the work
in batch mode. However, we are worried about whether the TENEX
based operating system is efficient enough to handle as many
users as the machine can compute for.

Therefore, we wonder if DEC would be interested in a
co-operative project to make system improvements to support very
large numbers of users. The manager of LOTS will be Ralph Gorin who
has been chief systems programmer at the AI Lab and is very
capable. The advantage of a co-operative project is that it would be
much easier for LOTS to remain compatible with DEC software which is
one of our goals.

Are you interested in exploring this possibility?

Look at leng.le3[let,jmc], but it occurs to me that if you are
going to Boston, it might be better to explore the matter there.
